2019 networking event

The 2019 Networking Interview Event hosted 54 interviewing teams from 32 companies over three days, September 9-11, at the Erb Memorial Union on campus. Students were abuzz as they interviewed and networked with industry and national lab professionals from all over the country. Recruitment teams came from both far and near with both coasts represented and a number of states in between- California, Idaho, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Texas, Oregon and Washington.

As always, the companies attending represented a variety of scientific sectors and came to recruit the program’s chemists, physicists and engineers for a wide array of positions and roles, including applications engineering, software development, optical engineering, hardware engineering, research chemist/physicist, formulation chemist and process engineer.

To break the ice, students and partners got acquainted during an informal mixer Monday evening, followed by a sit-down dinner and student speeches. Representatives from each track shared the trials, tribulations and takeaways of the summer – grit, teamwork, mentorship, authenticity and inclusion.

Tuesday morning, students arrived early for coffee and eagerly awaited for their first interview. Most felt a combination of confidence from their rigorous summer preparation and excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead. Students passed time between interviews in a break room swapping stories, doing puzzles and caffeinating before the next round.

As the event concluded on Wednesday afternoon, several students had already received multiple internship offers and countless more poured in over the next few days. Overall, corporate partners were thoroughly impressed by the technical and professional preparation of the students.
