Knight Campus to Host Photolithography Workshop

Photolithography process

The Knight Campus is proud to announce an upcoming training workshop, Photolithography: The Science & Art of Copying hosted by Semiconductor Track Director, Fuding Lin and Bioengineering faculty, Felix Deku. Scheduled for April 5th-7th, 2024, this workshop promises to be a valuable experience by offering participants a $300 stipend while they learn about the semiconductor industry, develop photolithography skills, have fun, and build a network.

The multi-day event is made possible through a generous contribution from Micron and a Future Ready Oregon: Workforce Ready Grant from the Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The program will kick off with a dinner on Friday, April 5th and will include representatives from Micron, Janine Rush-Byers, Carmen Achabal, and Payton Barber, who will be providing opening remarks.

The core of the workshop unfolds on Saturday and Sunday, where students will be immersed in a hands-on learning experience on the topics of photolithography (a key chemical step used in the semiconductor industry). Participants will bring a copy of their favorite artwork or photograph and will learn how to utilize photolithography to reproduce their chosen pieces under the expert guidance of industry professionals. They will then be able to take their creation home as a souvenir!

Furthermore, attendees will have the unique opportunity to gain comprehensive insights into Clean Room facilities (lab spaces with very low amounts of dust and particulates), including their operational protocols and their critical role in the semiconductor industry. Students will benefit from invaluable learning experiences that will prepare them for a future career. With nearly 50 applicants from the region, the call for participants had a strong outpouring of interest. Ultimately thirteen undergraduate participants from Umpqua Community College, Lane Community College and University of Oregon were selected to attend, all of whom are also part of the NSF S-STEM program, Oregon Pathways to Industry Research Careers

This workshop is intended to be a career-building experience for those interested in the semiconductor and high-tech sectors, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will undoubtedly shape the future leaders of the semiconductor industry.

The Knight Campus kindly acknowledges Micron and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission for their support of this program and to Knight Campus faculty and staff, Fuding Lin, Felix Deku and Stacey York (PI on the Future Ready Oregon grant) for their efforts in making the event a success.
