Required Application Materials

1. Request a Fee Waiver
We are waiving the application fee for all domestic applicants applying for Summer 2025.

Each applicant is eligible for ONE fee waiver. If you are considering more than one track or are not sure which track is right for you, please contact kcgip@uoregon.edu to talk to an advisor before starting an application. 

Please begin your application before requesting a waiver. We are only able to apply waivers to existing applications. To request a waiver, please fill out this form. We will do our best to apply the waiver to your application with 2-3 business days.  The status of your waiver request will be updated on the application portal. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the contacts above.

Note: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer fee waivers to international applicants.

2. Statement of Purpose
In approximately 500 words, please describe experience that makes you a strong candidate for this program. The program is particularly interested in:

1. Technical experience gained through employment, internships, for-credit research or project-based coursework. While beneficial, students do not need to have direct experience in the focus area they are applying to. 
2. Non-technical experience (e.g. employment, volunteerism, athletics) that required significant use of soft skills (teamwork, leadership, time management, etc.).
3. Description of why the program is a good fit for your career goals
4. Any additional information that allows a holistic assessment of your candidacy (e.g. hardship/adversity that has been overcome; an improvement in grades at upper vs lower level coursework).

We suggest you consider writing your statement in advance of filling out the application, then copy and paste it into the appropriate space on the form or upload the document directly.

3. Letters of recommendation
Request to have three letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf by faculty and/or supervisors. We recommend that at least one reference letter be provided by a supervisor familiar with your research and technical abilities. We recommend notifying your letter writers that you are applying to the Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program so they can anticipate the automated request sent from the application. It is up to the applicant to ensure that their letter writers have filled out the online recommendation form.

4. Resume
Create a resume highlighting all relevant information including volunteerism, extracurriculars, non-technical employment, research experience, technical experience, publications, scholarships, and awards. We recommend including information from at least the previous 4 years.

5. Transcripts
You will need to upload copies of your transcripts directly to the application, including all undergraduate and graduate work. You will need to provide official transcripts to the Office of the Registrar if you are admitted and decide to attend, but unofficial copies are acceptable during the initial application process.

The Application Process

In order to complete the online application process, you must:

1. Apply for Summer Term
The program begins summer term.

2. Fill out the application for the appropriate major and degree
Very important. The majors are listed alphabetically under the College of Arts and Sciences.

Please choose the following from the drop-down menu:

*Students interested in the semiconductor track should apply to the major that best suits their undergraduate background.

Then select "Master's Degree" from the Degree Type dropdown.

NOTE: If you choose a general chemistry, physics or biology major, you will be applying to the PhD program.

3. Submit your transcripts
Upload unofficial copies of your transcripts directly to the application, including all undergraduate and graduate work.

4. Submit three letters of recommendation
Enter the contact information for your letter writers. If unforeseen circumstances require you to change your request to a different recommender, contact the appropriate individual listed above under the section labeled: Questions about your application?

5. Upload your resume

6. Upload your Statement of Purpose

7. Demonstrate English language proficiency if you are a non-native speaker
A satisfactory proficiency in the English language is required for admission of non-native speakers of English. Requests to waive this requirement or for permission to be admitted with the intent to take the exam upon arrival will not be accommodated.

Students must demonstrate proficiency by one of the following options:

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), minimum score requirement: 105*
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS), minimum score requirement: 7.5*
• Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited U.S. college or university

*Note these scores are higher than the University of Oregon minimum. Test scores must be less than 2 years old at the time of application.
